Damn it, I had wished for England.

And a big blargh at drawing Iceland again. The away matches against them are a pain in the ass for any team.

Drawing Denmark is pretty cool though. Can't wait for the war between Danish and Norwegian media exchanging insults and whatnot

Wouldn't want Spain's group either.

Quote of the Cyprus coach: "Cyprus and Norway will be aiming to make a big push in the group, while I believe Iceland will be a little behind the rest."

I know Norway isn't as good as Portugal, but come on He's comparing Cyprus(!!) to Norway and he thinks Iceland will finish last. Even KeoN has more football knowledge than this dude

11 men behind the ball against a very similar level team similar to the opposite fixture (that 2nd half at villa park -lol)

cowardice much alike my dislike of of hiddink / mourinho and even harry redknapp to an extent, as i've ranted to great detail previously

however at the same time you guys were indeed superb defensively, but it's just a shame there wasn't really any more football on offer besides that. i'm not saying you should be coming gung ho a la man city when we ripped them apart 3-0, but some 28 shots vs 10 says a lot i think. (in the opp fixture we had 23 vs 12 of yours whilst away)

it's almost a shame we started the season off as well as we did because teams know we struggle to break them down when they play as you have and as our losses to wolves, stoke, etc prove - but we aren't good enough at all to be treated as one of such teams (esp with our most direct player, lennon, injured for another while still) so we're screwed pretty much

this same thing happened to villa last year which coincided with their stark downturn in form (as it has with ours)

Jonny, any comment on

1. Gazza , getting hammered and causing a commotion , and getting arrested.
2. Andy Carroll , getting hammered , causing a commotion , and getting arrested.
3. West Brom and Notts Forest going out of their way to hand you the title on a plate, and Rob Earnshaw playing the worlds worst mind games in the papers today.

Ste , your input on Earnie trying to be Fergie would be appreciated.

Had this conversation with a Villa fan , and a Spurs fan , this morning.

The entire game , between you , you managed 9 shots on target. Including anything hit from outside the area , and weak shots that trickled into the keepers arms or were cleared.

You cancelled each other out. Two managers with similar goals played the exact tactic the other one expected , and ended up with nothing.

0-0 was the fair result.

it was the fair result - we weren't good enough to score, and they didn't try for anything more than a draw. by the way we had 15 shots on target. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...em/8493278.stm)

but that's the point i was making, clubs are coming to WHL parking the bus whilst we're not actually THAT good (as in we don't have a rooney torres drogba to score out of nothing etc because huddlestone is still fat, palacios is just a better zokora, modric has the least composure in front of goal for someone so supremely gifted i've ever seen, crouch is wasted and defoe's purely a percentages player like andy cole back in the day - shoot enough and he'll score, kranjcar has sublime finishing technique but is inconsistent as shit, bentley has lost nearly all of his footballing ability since moving to us..etc)

villa don't really have anyone like this either (closest is a.young but not really, same boat as lennon although lennon's been brilliant this year, i prefer milner to young in the end just as i prefer modric to lennon mind) but that's ultimately why we aren't a top team but just pretenders.

Match stats from BBC , ESPN & Sky all confirming 5 Spurs shots on target from 34 shots total , and 4 Villa shots on target from 11 efforts on goal.

This does back up your theory of a park the bus , but also says your midfield is horrifically wasteful when shooting , and maybe 'Arry needed a different approach to playing Villa.

1. Haven't read about it. Just wish somebody would take care of him, he can't do it himself.

2. Glassed his mate. Young yet, has to learn.

3. Yeah I see your point. It's not like were 15 games unbeaten in the league is it.

Earnie is quoted in the mirror today saying how he thinks its much harder being in 2nd place than 3rd , and it puts the pressure on teams in that position , and how he believed Forest will play better for the remainder of the season if they sit just behind West Brom.

davies is too busy whinging about being kicked during the Derby game.

Yeah well, it could be argued that the toon are the team everybody wants to beat this season as seen by the high attendances at our away games, so I don't see how 2nd or 3rd is harder?.

Speaking of attendances.....

Friday night Championship match at Newcastle 44,028
Saturday Premiership match at the Great Unwashed 38,350.

it's a lot easier to watch a team when you're winning, doubt it's reflective of the fans too much.

Well yes and no on a few levels.

Compare Man U, Chelsea and Spuds to Scunthorpe, Doncaster and Plymouth.

Then compare the average gates.

Done that?

Then compare our average gate last season (how many games did we win), to Sunderland's this season. Also bear in mind, they was winning team for the first half of the season.

It simply does not stack up jer. Both seasons we are top.

I've no beef against you, I mean this is a million miles removed from your team. But the fact that the Mackams insist they are a bigger club than us is simply bullshit. I've no doubts whatsoever that their support is as fervent as ours, and I have great respect for that, but on this one point they are sadly deluded. Passion or not, past and modern history doesn't lie.

Living in Arsenals shadow, I totally understand the error of your ways

Yeah, Spurs dominated in midfield and the whole of the first half especially. In many respects, I get frustrated at the amount of times we do tend to hoof the ball instead of playing it out. It's not that we're a "long ball team", but the defence are blatantly encouraged to just lump it up to one of the big men if under ANY pressure. Our midfield is creative and filled with flair but often goes completely overlooked.

That said, I think teams are always going to play to their strengths. Spurs are a more effective attacking team than defensive (although pretty good all round), whereas Villa are solid defensively (although, again, with a decent attack). We lack a striker, basically. It was always going to be Spurs attacking and us playing on the counter! Granted, maybe not to the extent that it ended up being. I fail to believe that Friedel actually made 15 saves in that game, though - most of Spurs' shots were edge of the area/distance pops that got blocked by our defence (hence the 14 corners or whatever it was).

Either way, whatever O'Neill decided to do, tactically, worked for us. Spurs are a better footballing side than us at the moment with 2 strikers in the reckoning for the WC - yet they've failed to beat us this season. Likewise with Moaning Wenger going on about the long ball situation - he's just frustrated that his "wonderful, fluid, attractive, pure-football" playing team failed to score against our solid defence.

I think that's what O'Neill is trying to do at Villa - make sure the defence holds up and THEN go for more attacking options. Agbonlahor, unfortunately, isn't going to make the step up to being a class finisher but he offers more to our team than either Carew or Heskey. This will, surely, be O'Neill main place of concern in the summer window.

If we had a 15/20-goal a season striker, we'd currently be challenging for a position in the top 3. After all, only Chelsea and Man City have lost less games than us this season I believe? Drawing is our downfall.

Villa are a bigger team than Newcastle, but our average attendance isn't as big as yours. What's your point like?

Heh, I'm loving this debate. What makes you bigger? One spawny deflected goal in the last game last season? Well does it? On such margins.

Let's look at our all time matches then. History.

Played
149

Newcastle Wins
64

Draws
31

Your Wins
54.

Does that make Newcastle a bigger club, fuck no.

I'd imagine our FA Cup (certainly in circa 1930) and Div 1 winners are pretty even.

Of course you won the European Championship nearly 30 years ago, but you you've never been to last 8 of the Champions League etc. Oh, sorry have you even made CL?

Yes our support is bigger however we've a lot less competition but our population is significantly smaller and more spread out.

Our Premiership record reads.....

Away to you

2008/09 lost 0-1
2007/08 lost 1-4 Owen
2006/07 lost 0-2
2005/06 won 2-1 Ameobi, N'Zogbia
2004/05 lost 2-4 Kluivert, O'Brien
2003/04 drew 0-0
2002/03 won 1-0 Shearer
2001/02 drew 1-1 Shearer
2000/01 drew 1-1 Solano
2000/01 lost 1-0 (FAC)
1999/00 won 1-0 Ferguson
1998/99 lost 0-1
1997/98 won 1-0 Batty
1996/97 drew 2-2 Shearer, Clark
1995/96 drew 1-1 Ferdinand
1994/95 won 2-0 Lee, Cole
1993/94 won 2-0 Allen (pen), Cole

Newcastle at home

2008/09: Won 2-0 Martins 2
2007/08: Drew 0-0
2006/07: Won 3-1 Milner, Dyer, Sibierski
2005/06: Drew 1-1 Shearer (pen)
2004/05: Lost 0-3
2003/04: Drew 1-1 Robert
2002/03: Drew 1-1 Solano
2001/02: Won 3-0 Bellamy 2, Shearer
2000/01: Won 3-1 Glass, Cort, OG
2000/01: Drew 1-1 Solano (FAC)
1999/00: Lost 0-1
1998/99: Won 2-1 Shearer, Ketsbaia
1997/98: Won 1-0 Beresford
1996/97: Won 4-3 Ferdinand 2, Shearer, Howey
1995/96: Won 1-0 Ferdinand
1994/95: Won 3-1 Venison, Beardsley 2
1993/94: Won 5-1 Bracewell, Beardsley 2, Cole, Sellars

So going off the most recent tangible evidence it reads...

You Won - 8
Drew - 10
Newcastle - 16

Of course there's the small matter of leagues. Apart from that fairly equal I'd say. I'd expect you to counter, but my beef here is neither against jer or you.

So to answer your enquiry like Bobzy, none of the above, some by thousands and others by mere tens in no way whatsoever do Sunderland even come close to competing with Newcastle, apart from our current leagues. With the way things are going our respective leagues could be reversed next season and those beautifully red and white paranoid fickle bastards will still insist they are a bigger club. Period.

Delusion, in the first degree.

Does that answer your question?

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has withdrawn his appeal against an extra one-match ban following his clash with Craig Fagan.

Haha, victory!

If it had been Jones or Bent and they decided to appeal then naturally, Sunderland would be a bigger club than Man United

what the fuck is with this "bigger" club shit?
Some clubs have good history, it doesn't make them good now though does it? (Leeds, Wolves, Forest)
Some clubs have higher attendance at games - does this make them better?
I seriously don't get this whole "bigger" shit. A club's history is history. A club's present (although I say present, I do mean the past couple of seasons too) is what matters right now.

Of course you don't get it. You don't serious(ly) support a football team. Tell me you was born in Kensington and I'll lick your sweaty Welsh balls.

Next.

ok , we really need a combined definition of a "Big" club . either its

"Big Catchment Area , and large attendances at every game"
"Successful historically with many trophies at every level of the game"
Or , its the current method
"Excellent PR machine and a lot of money giving the impression of the two above"

By the definitions above , Villa & Forest are big Clubs , they have won the European Cup & Domestic Trophies.
Newcastle and Sunderland have not , and as such are not. A huge , passionate supporter base unfortunately does not qualify a club as being "Big". If you gents would care to clue me in on your history in relation to the above (number of domestic trophies at the highest level, number of European Trophies , etc etc) ill rethink this statement.

I always determine big clubs by the size of their turnover and their supporter base. Which is the clubs with the most resources.

I'll say again, I'm not comparing any club to Newcastle. Sunderland fans are comparing their club to Newcastle and saying they are bigger.

Any 10 year old with a bit nonce would get an A+ proving them wrong. See above.

As to who is bigger than than who generally, then maybe Nadar is part of the way their. Passions without.

Does this deserve a thread of its own, I'd like to think we could all justify why our club is the best

Just need to point out that inspite of their best efforts in throwing away a good lead, Carlisle are off to Wembley for their 5th Johnstone Paint Trophy final.

Isildurx , any chance you can tell me why the hell Villa are so absoloutely fn toothless up front?

Ive formed a theory that the team is so heavily based around O'Neill's 4-5-1 counter attacking formation that when they go up against 10 men , and they have to move onto the front foot , theyre out of ideas as to how to play a creative build up , as theyre so used to throwing it long into the channels for Agbonlahor & Young to chase.

You were shocking in the 2nd half last night. And could easily have lost.

not really a new theory - it was exactly the case last year. they need to buy a creative AM/forward and this hasn't changed really.

or simply a world class attacking player - but that's what separates us from the top 4. we don't have fabregas, van persie, torres, gerrard, rooney, drogba, anelka, lampard. (obviously united/chelsea have the added benefit of a top player at every position generally on top of that)

This what I have said for months now, we are really really bad at chasing games. Our strikers are quite simply toothless. Agbonlahor has certain very good elements in his playingstyle but we desperately need a quality striker to accompany him up front(as well as a creative midfielder - like jer has pointed out many times). Last night we also played very bad, no doubt about that, however at times we can also play some quite good football(f.ex vs Fulham away).

Our defence + the defensive capabilities of midfield is quite good(the amount of miles run by Milner\Young in a match is quite extraordinary) but offensively were not up to it. Whether this is because Young, Milner, and Downing have too many defensive duties I don't know.. but I doubt it.

Bottom line: we desperately need a world-class offensive player if we ever want to make it into the t4.

still haven't seen the Earnshaw quote and it hasn't been mentioned on the forest forum i frequent...

essentially we've overperformed all season and it's starting to catch up on us. Most of the fans would have been happy with a top half finish this season, now it's looking like the play-offs which is a great achievement.
The fact we even had a chance of automatic promotion is pretty amazing!

Non-league nige and dirty derby were really up for that match, and it's apparently clear that Davies gets kicked by Clough after the game. Sullying his fathers reputation

Youre not suggesting hes gotten an injury which he will recover from JUST IN TIME to go to the World Cup , thus preventing him from losing his spot to a loss of form , etc etc?

Mark Clattenberg is a terrible, terrible ref. There must be a shortage, there's no other way to explain his employment.

I saw a woman had to referee a Championship-match some days ago because the main referee got injured. Maybe she could take over?

What was the match Nads? Did she have the respect of the players?

Got me thinking lads, would women make better refs?

Can't remember exactly (cba running down to look for the newspaper), but I think it might have been a Forest-match? It also said it was the first time a woman refereed a match this high up in the system.

I think it would be interesting with female referees. They could have a problem with running around / condition, but that could be trained. I think we'd see a lot less temperament on the pitch, especially as players most likely would yell at a female referee like they yell at a male one. We had a female linesman (heh lineswoman!) in a match last year. A Stabęk-player that likes to yell at the refs turned to yell at a decision, but quickly stopped himself when he realized it was the female ref he turned towards
